News Update: 02/01/05 ESL Opportunity for Scouts
The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd started an ESL (English as a Second
Language) program for adults this fall. They meet in room 114 on Tuesday and
Thursday from 6 to 7:30PM.
Recently we offered child care in the nursery right across the hall from Room
114, which brought in 3 new Spanish speaking students with 3-4 children
needing child care.
This offers 2 opportunities for service for Scouts who are interested:
1) Help with child care. It could be for the 1 hour before Scouts on Tuesday
or for the whole 1 1/2 hours on Thursday. If you can speak Spanish it would
help, but would not be required. The two three year olds speak only Spanish,
but their older siblings help in translating. We would like you to be in high
school and have had some previous child care experience. If you enjoy small
children and other cultures you might enjoy this service opportunity.
2) Be a conversation partner or tutor for one of the adults. This could
take anywhere from 15-30 minutes on either Tuesday or Thursday. We can provide
topics for you to talk about. You would just ask questions and listen to their
answers and help them with pronunciation and share your answers. The main
requirement for this service opportunity is to be interested in getting to know
people of other cultures.
If you are interested in either of these opportunities contact Dotty Fehring. |
